About HAPI

What is HAPI?

Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) is a shareholding company which works to cultivate media coverage in the Horn of Africa in a way that embraces and fosters development and peace. Officially launched in September 2004, HAPI focuses primarily on the need to promote free, independent and pluralistic media in the Horn of Africa region.

HAPI seeks for!

HAPI seeks ways in which to promote the free flow of information and co-operation between media workers, as a principal means of nurturing democracy and development in Africa.

The role of HAPI!

The role of HAPI is to bring Horn of Africa countries together to form a network of journalists and take a part to alleviate issues hindering the development of the media and journalist from fulfilling their role as the “watchdogs” of society.

HAPI Objectives

The primary objective of HAPI is to become a strategic institution to enhance the capacity of the Media and prop up freedom of the media in the Horn of Africa countries.

Among the other objectives are:

Undertaking pertinent research

Undertaking pertinent research into the freedom and development of the media of the Horn countries.

Establishment and Facilitation

Establishing and Facilitate a media research and information center that fulfills all requirements.

School of journalism

Establishing a school of journalism that is one of a kind in the horn of Africa.

Create network among journalists

Creating a network and opening dialogue for Horn journalists, media institutions and civil society organizations.

Research outcomes

Organizing, publishing and distributing research outcomes, training materials, proceeding resolutions and books related to the media

HAPI Mission

In accordance with Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the objectives set forth of Article 3 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, the assertions of Tony Blair's Commission for Africa, the implications of the UN Millennium Development Goals and numerous other international declarations, HAPI operates to see the African media freely working for democracy and development.

The mission of the Institute is to assist development of the free media in the Horn countries by organizing and implementing various need-based short and long-term capacity-building and educational trainings. It also undertakes research activities as well as organizing conferences and workshops. Furthermore, HAPI publish books, training and other media related materials to urge press freedom and to build the capacity of the press in the region. The institute is committed to seeing the Horn of Africa and the Continent achieve participatory democracy, peace, stability and economic growth. As a result the values of our institute are based on providing ethical, dedicated, non-partisan service to media professionals, institutions, partners and the public.

HAPI Visions

Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) aspires to see freedom of the media to prevail in the Horn of Africa, which in turn will play a significant role for the advancement of peace, democracy, economic development and justice in the region.
